Sargent House Museum
The house, a fine example of high-style Georgian domestic architecture, was built in 1782 for Judith Sargent Murray (1751-1820), a philosopher, writer and an early advocate of women’s equality. Today, museum visitors learn about the early history of Gloucester from its beginnings as a farming and lumbering outpost to its evolution into the country’s premier seaport. There is a collection of original works by the great portrait painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) descendant of the Sargent family, who loved the house and its ties to Colonial Gloucester.

Gloucester City Hall
In 1867, Gloucester decided to build a new town hall to replace what is now known as the American Legion building. The building, constructed of brick and red granite, was designed to accommodate at least 1,500 people. In 1869, a fire destroyed the building, which had cost $79,000 and had held $10,000 in furnishings. The decision was made to rebuild and architects Bryant and Rogers were hired in 1870. The hall was built in the style of Independence Hall in Philadelphia at a cost of $100,000. Through the years many events have been held in the second floor auditorium of City Hall. It was used as a gym for the playing of basketball and track by the high school. The shows of Buffalo Bill, P.T. Barnum and boxing matches featuring John L. Sullivan were also held in the auditorium. Between the second and third floors of City Hall, the walls are covered with the names of 4,000 of Gloucester’s fishermen who lost their lives to the sea. Gloucester City Hall is filled with mosaics, historic commemorative plaques, and memorabilia. There is also a very large collection of Works Progress Administration murals from 1935 through 1942. It was listed on the National Register of Historic places in 1973.

Cape Ann Museum
Cape Ann - which includes the city of Gloucester, America’s oldest fishing port, and the towns of Rockport, Manchester and Essex - has been a leading center for artists since the 19th century and the source of granite for building projects up and down the East coast. The Cape Ann Museum maintains and exhibits material relating to these major themes. In addition to its permanent collections, it offers a rotating schedule of special exhibits throughout the year. The Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and closed Mondays and major holidays.

Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center
The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center is the only working historic waterfront in the Northeast that combines a historic working marine railway, where wooden vessels are hauled and repaired. The Center features a Gulf of Maine aquarium, vessels tracing the fishing history of Gloucester, ongoing construction of wooden boats, and educational exhibits and programs including a sea pocket lab.

Gloucester Seafood Display Auction
After 40 yrs in the fishing business, brother and sister team of Larry and Rosemarie Ciulla furthered their family wholesale fish business and established the Gloucester Seafood Display Auction (GSDA) in 1997. Their family business was originally founded by their grandfather, Capt Carlo Ciaramitaro and continued with their parents, Gus and Rose Ciulla. The GSDA has become the premier unloading facility and auction for the port of Gloucester, America’s oldest Seaport, along with Cape Cod, the outer Islands, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine and provides a fair venue to market, sell and buy product. Capt Carlo’s Restaurant
Capt Carlo’s, located on Gloucester’s working waterfront, is owned by locals who have been in the fishing industry for four generations. Named for and in honor of the late Capt. Carlo Ciaramitaro, the restaurant holds very proudly its reputation for having the very best of seafood to be found anywhere. Lobsters, clams, haddock, swordfish, salmon, shrimp, scallops, and calamari are just some of the fresh seafood prepared as well as steaks, chicken, burgers, pastas, and salads. The atmosphere has a casual, nautical feel, and outside dining is always a favorite on a sunny day. Fritz Hugh Lane House
Son of a sailmaker, Fitz Hugh Lane was born Nathaniel Rogers Lane in the fishing port of Gloucester, Massachusetts on December 18, 1804 and his family subsequently changed his first and middle names. Paralyzed as a young child, probably by infantile polio, Lane was obliged to use crutches. He learned the rudiments of drawing and sketching while in his teens and in 1832 worked briefly with a lithographic firm in Gloucester. During the 1860s Lane produced what are perhaps his most poignant paintings, focusing primarily on familiar scenes around Gloucester and in Maine. In 1864 and 1865 Lane was in poor health and, following a bad fall in August 1865, apparently suffered a heart attack or stroke; he died in Gloucester on the 13th of that month. Establishing a strong local reputation among the artists and public of Boston and Gloucester, Lane’s art never enjoyed national standing during his lifetime; not until the term LUMINISM (I)—denoting the fascination with the poetic and transcendental properties of light—gained currency in the historiography of American art was his painting seen to epitomize a broader phenomenon within 19th-century American landscape painting.

The Whale Center of New England
The Whale Center of New England (WCNE), formerly the Cetacean Research Unit, was founded in 1980 to study the whales frequenting waters off the Massachusetts coast, especially Stellwagen Bank and Jeffreys Ledge. The Center conducts field research from their research vessel Mysticete, and from public whale watch boats. A pre-eminent research institution, its over 25 years of field-based studies, utilizing individual identification markings for detailed behavioral studies, are the basis for many published scientific articles by the Whale Center’s staff and interns, the development of educational materials, and involvement in conservation efforts involving marine animals and their habitat.

The Schooner Adventure
The schooner Adventure was designed by Thomas F. McManus and built in 1926, in Essex, Massachusetts, by the John F. James and Son Shipyard. She measured 121.6 feet in length, 24.5 feet in breadth, and 14 feet in depth. Her gross tonnage was 130 and her net tonnage 62. Later refitted as a windjammer, Adventure carried passengers along the coast of Maine until 1987. Her grace, beauty, and prowess as a sailing vessel earned her the nickname "Queen of the Windjammers." In 1988 Adventure was given to the people of Gloucester to be preserved as Gloucester’s historic tall ship and to be used to inform and educate the public about Gloucester’s role in the development of the American fishing industry and the importance of maintaining and protecting the fisheries. Adventure, an irreplaceable artifact from an extraordinary era in American history, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994, and selected as an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1999. Adventure also serves as a living memorial to the Gloucester fishermen lost at sea.
