The knobs, tubercles, on the humpback whale are about the size of a golf ball, each is a hair follicle with a single, coarse hair 1/2 to 1 1/4 inches growing out of its center. Connected to a well-developed blood supply, it is thought these tubercles aid in sensory capability.
